Course Description

Course Dates 9th April - Start Time 17:30 10th April - Start Time 17:30 21st August - Start Time 18:00 22nd August. - Start Time 18:00 Seaweeds have long been a part of our culture, living on a small maritime island they have been harvested as food all around the British coasts by our great ancestors for a millennia. In our modern culture we are making less and less use of these superfoods. Lets reconnect with our ancient ancestors and reignite our curiosity and taste for these delightful coastal foods. WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING ON THE COURSE On a seaweed foraging course we will be exploring the intertidal zones of Worthings abundant shores, combing the foreshore for edible seaweeds. Worthing is an excellent location for seaweeds, the rocky substrate on the foreshore is an ideal habitat for a diversity of edible seaweeds. We have choice edibles that are sort after by gourmet chefs and one of the most nutritional species of seaweed in the world. Seaweeds are also excellent for beginner foragers as almost all that can be gathered on foot are edible. The course is highly conducive to natures rhythms and the course times are allocated to when the tide is at its lowest so we can access the rich resources exposed as the tide recedes. There will be an emphasis on sustainable foraging practices so you can forage with a clear conscience. COURSE DETAILS The course will be held in Worthing and will run for approximately 3 hours. The walk will be gentle but along rocky substrate which can be slippery, you will need to be fit enough to walk the routes. An email will be sent two days prior to the event with the exact location and anticipated conditions for the day. It would be convenient to drive as the location is remote. On occasions lift shares can be organised. We will be having tasters on route and typically finish with botanical drinks. Under 18's are free. WHAT TO BRING Wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions and seasons. Bring any refreshments you may need such as water and snacks. Wear comfy walking shoes. If the conditions are expected to be muddy you will be advised suitable footwear in the email Bring a basket or container or cloth bag to store any foraged food you would like to take home. We discourage the use of plastic bags to store foraged food in. A note pad and pen to write down information with. Alternatively; A camera to take pictures or for filming.
